SharePoint Designer "failed to load this workflow" or Windows Workflow Foundation, part of .Net Framework 3.0, must be installed to use this feature.

To resolve this issue please update your designer with the hotfixes in sequence. Make sure the designer is NOT open.

Once installation is complete open the site once again. A restart may not be necessary. If you still get the same issue then clear your designer cache by running this

rmdir "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\WebsiteCache\" /s /q
rmdir "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\SharePoint Designer\ProxyAssemblyCache\" /s /q

Then Restart you PC.

  1. I just updated my box with all latest Windows updates and the error starting popping up. I didn't do the hotfixes, but just went ahead to removed the directories in your post and it worked. A big THANK YOU to you!!

  2. Hi, I just applied the first hotfix and it worked for me, the issue that I had was that I was working with many stages, I founfd this about it:
•SharePoint Designer cannot load the existing workflows that contain disconnected stages, and you receive an error message when the loading fails.
